MYOFASCIAL CUPPING

What is it?

Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation (IASTM for short) is a non-invasive form of manual therapy where instruments are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body to reduce pain and improve overall mobility. Some would say that the tools can be an extension of the hands and can increase the sensitivity of what the operator may feel in terms of adhesions; for example, when rodents feel objects with their whiskers and spiders localise their prey using a web. It is often applied in conjunction with other manual therapies and exercise. This therapy is becoming very popular among practitioners and patients alike.

What do the tools look like?

Tools can be made of wood, ceramics, plastic. The ones used within our clinic are made of stainless steel. They are either convex or concave in shape.

What are they used for?

The principles of IASTM are similar to those of conventional soft tissue manipulation and massage. IASTM can be used to treat soft tissue pain, injury and dysfunction. They are great for enabling the user to identify adhesions and restrictions within the tissues.

Below are listed some examples of conditions that may benefit from the application of IASTM:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Neck and back pain
  • Rotator cuff pain
  • Myofascial pain and restriction
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Post-surgical scars
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • De Quervain tenosynovitis
  • Scarring (post operative/ traumatic)

If you aren’t sure whether this is a treatment modality for you, or you have further questions about it, please ask when you come for your appointment.
