REMS scanning is a quick, painless ultrasound scan used to check how strong and healthy your bones are. It is most commonly used to screen for osteoporosis and see how likely you are to break a bone in the near future.
Risk factors can include.
Post menopause without HRT prescribed.
Early Menopause
If you have had long term steroid use in the past.
Had a full hysterectomy.
Drink more than 15 units of alcohol per week.
Smoking HX
Even men can have hormonal changes leading to osteoporosis and men who only cycle & swim – low impact exercise.
Low body weight / disordered eating.
No loading exercises
Rems works by using sound waves – not X rays, therefore no exposure to radiation. Therefore it is very safe and repeatable.
It is different from normal DEXA that will only measure how dense our bones are. REMS checks the density and the internal quality or architecture of the bone.
You will also get instant results and a consultation on next steps appropriate to your individual needs.
If you would like to book an appointment or have any other questions please contact Sharon at the clinic and we can advise you of the availability.
Rems practitioner is Paul Magee as pictured.
